Beyond Koufax: Judaism and Sports

Wednesday, November 6, 2024 5 Cheshvan 5785

11:00 AM - 1:00 PMTemple Beth El

Sports have the innate ability to connect people from across the world around a single game, team, or athlete. For many, being a part of a sports fanbase is almost like belonging to a religion. So what happens when Judaism interacts with the world of athletics? Why is it that Jews have historically been seen as unathletic? What can sports teach us about Jewish values and priorities? Join us as Rabbi Lexi Erdheim presents “Beyond Koufax: Judaism and Sports," studying how Jewish sports perspectives have transformed over time.

Les Gordon, an avid collector of sports cards, will present “A Century of Jewish Athletes Through Their Sports Cards,” showcasing the rich history and contributions of Jewish athletes over the past century.

And of course, it wouldn’t be complete without a cookout-style menu, featuring burgers, hot dogs, classic cookout sides, and apple pie.

Registration for lunch is required.  The cost for lunch is $15 for TBE members and $18 for non-members.

Presented by SPICE.

Register by Sunday, November 3.  Please list the names of everyone you are registering as we will have nametags!
